The English along with Welsh Placed Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales will face off in the same pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major early encounter in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in France, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the pools play out in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. France are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
